Tony Kulik Wood Engraving

The Range Light Keepers have commissioned and received a signed limited edition wood engraving of the Range Lights (detail, right) by Maine artist Tony Kulik.

Wood Engraving Wood engraving is a relief process involving the carving of lines on the end of a woodblock. What remains of the original surface is inked and then pressed onto paper to create the primed image. In England, Thomas Bewick and other artists developed it as an artistic technique in the 1790's. It quickly became the most common method of illustration because of its fast and inexpensive production. In the 1800's it was replaced by photography. After the 1920's it once again regained stature as a dynamic method of artistic expression.

Tony Kulik was born in Rhode Island in 1947 and has spent most of his life in northern New England. Tony finds wood engraving, a time-consuming and meticulously-detailed art, well suited for capturing the unique qualities of native landscape and structures whose character are derived from exposure to the harsh environment. The many hours spent engraving fine lines into an end-grain maple block give the artist time to reflect on the spirit of the subject as well as its form. His passion for the medium is evident in the studied subtleties found in the setting of this moonlit piece. Like his other engravings, it is truly a fascinating work of art.

The Range Light Keepers are offering the print as a gift premium for individuals or businesses making a $75 or more donation to the organization.
